Report on Summer 2016 program
The International Education and Exchange Center (IEEC) hosted the “Nagoya University Short-Term Japanese Language Program (NUSTEP)” for two weeks between July 7 and 21, 2016. Twenty-one students from eight affiliated international partner universities participated – the second session since its inception.
All students took Japanese language classes in the morning and participated in other activities to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture or society. They also experienced education and research at Nagoya University. Students took a placement test and then, based on proficiency, were divided into two classes. Even though they were in separate classes, everyone studied the same topics with the explicit purpose of improving his or her academic Japanese.
In the afternoon, participants joined various activities such as specialized lectures, laboratory visits, trying on Kimono, Shodo, a visit to a Toyota automobile factory, a workshop in which students thought about their career, and a social event with Nagoya University students. On July 9, students visited the nearby city of Okazaki, and on July 16, they toured Nagoya Castle and Nagoya City Science Museum.
The last day saw participants give oral presentations on what they thought about "Japan." Both Japanese students and Nagoya University staff were impressed with the complexity of the content and participants' language fluency.
The students who joined the program could communicate with participants from various countries and Japanese students. One of the participants said they would “introduce NUSTEP to students in my university after I go back.” We are working hard to improve the program, so it benefits all future participants.
